Gas nitriding

This application is a thermochemical process in which the workpieces to be treated are heated and exposed to a nitrogen-containing gas or a mixture of carbon-producing gas and ammonia during both the heating time and the treatment.

Owing to this nitrogen or carbon treatment, the material properties of the workpieces with regard to strength, wear behaviour and corrosion behaviour are optimised in a targeted manner, which opens up a broad range of industrial uses for materials treated in this manner.

As these thermal processes are carried out at temperatures below 600°C, any formation of martensite resulting from the conversion of the material structure by hardening and subsequent quenching and the associated changes in shape and size can be largely avoided. Workpieces which are to be subjected to gas nitriding can therefore be finished already. However, a slight increase in volume must sometimes be taken into account; we recommend experiments during the project planning phase.
